Experience is Everything: Lorraine Kelly talks to Nigel Havers

Nigel Havers was sent to boarding school at six. Within a year, he’d been cast as a page boy in the school’s summer Shakespeare production and knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life.

More than 50 years into his acting career, the Chariots of Fire star talks to Experience Is Everything host Lorraine Kelly about working with Steven Spielberg, David Lean and Michael Caine, why he refused to audition for the Chariots role that he ultimately played, and the I’m A Celebrity campmate that he still can’t stand.

Those early years shaped more than his career. Nigel shares his father’s parting words at the school gates and recalls what it was like living alone in London at 15 during the Swinging Sixties. He also opens up about coping with the death of his second wife Polly, and the joy of being a grandfather.

With his trademark charm, he offers a funny and frank take on ageing, resilience and the reality that actors don’t choose to retire, they get retired.
