NO CLAIM BONUS

Find out how a No Claim Bonus works
and how it makes a difference.

Qualify for No Claim Discount with Saga Comprehensive Car Insurance

If you’re fortunate enough to not have been involved in a car accident, you may benefit from a No Claim Bonus, also known as a No Claim Discount, for each year that you haven’t made a claim. Get the details on how a No Claim Bonus works, how you can protect it, and how you can prove you have one.

What is a No Claim Bonus?

Each year you drive without making a claim on your car insurance, you’ll be entitled to a discount on the cost of your car insurance known as a No Claim Bonus or a No Claim Discount. The more years you drive without making an insurance claim, the bigger the discount on your renewal premium should be.

Can I protect my No Claim Bonus?

Knowing how to protect your No Claim Bonus will help you keep your discount when it comes to renewal time, even if you make a claim. Generally, like with our Saga Standard cover where Protected No Claim Discount cover is an optional extra, insurers ask you to pay an additional amount on top of your car insurance premium to protect you against losing a No Claim Bonus after an accident. But with Saga Plus and Saga Select Comprehensive policies, Protected No Claim Discount cover is included as standard if you have four or more years' No Claim Discount.

Saga Car Insurance can protect your No Claim Discount entitlement from going down (although that doesn’t protect your premium from going up at renewal). You can even keep your No Claim Discount if you’ve had a fault claim in the last three years – it will only be reduced if you make more than two fault claims in three consecutive years of insurance.

Is a No Claim Bonus transferable?

A No Claim Bonus is applied to the main car insurance policyholder when a policy starts and isn’t transferable to another person. But if you get a new car during your policy, you can transfer a No Claim Bonus to a new car.

If you cancel your insurance before the end of your policy term, you’ll lose your No Claim Bonus for that year, but you’ll still carry any No Claim Discount from previous years. You’ll need proof from your previous insurer when you’re moving your policy to Saga, such as a renewal letter or cancellation notice. This shows the details of the discount you’re entitled to.

How long can you keep a No Claim Bonus for?

If you have current car insurance, your No Claim Bonus will continue to build over a number of years. But what if you have a period of time where you don’t have car insurance?

With Saga car insurance policies, your No Claim Discount will be valid for two years after the end of your last policy, provided it isn’t being used on another policy. If your No Claim Bonus is no longer valid, you’ll need to build it up again from scratch.

What happens to my No Claim Discount when I make a claim?

If you damage your car and need to make one or more claims on your Saga car insurance policy, you may lose some of your No Claim Discount, unless the discount is protected. Your No Claim Discount is protected with Saga Plus and Saga Select policies, as long as you make no more than two claims in three years.

Depending on the nature of further claims, your No Claim Discount may be reduced at your next renewal, and we may apply additional terms to your policy.

There are some exceptions you should know about. If your policy is Comprehensive then your No Claim Discount won’t be affected by a claim if:

  • we can recover our full costs from another insurer
  • you only claim for broken glass in your vehicle’s windscreen, windows or sunroof (except for panoramic sunroofs).

How do I get my No Claim Bonus proof?

When you apply for Saga insurance, we’ll ask you how much No Claim Bonus you already have. You may not always be asked for proof of your No Claim Bonus, but if you are, you should know how to check your No Claim Bonus status.

Your No Claim Bonus might be stated on the paperwork from your current insurer when they send a renewal notice, or you may need to request the information from them directly.

If we need more information, we’ll attempt to contact your previous insurer, and if we can’t confirm your No Claim Discount that way, we’ll write to you asking for written proof.

You can send us originals or photocopies of:

  • previous insurer's renewal notice
  • No Claim Discount letter
  • broker's proof.

Written proof must clearly show names and dates. You can email your No Claim Discount proof directly to us, or send it to:

NCD Validation, Saga Services Limited, PO Box 253, Seaham DO, SR7 1BN.
