Getting a new car is exciting! But what do you do about car insurance if you’ve already got an existing policy for your old set of wheels? Can you transfer car insurance from one car to another, or will you have to take out a new policy?
Read on to find out what your options are.
Yes, most insurers allow you to transfer your existing car insurance policy to another car. Most car insurance policies run for 12 months, but you can’t be expected to only change cars on the day your policy is up for renewal.
You can make changes to your Saga car insurance policy at any time, and your updated policy will cover you until your existing renewal date.
It’s a straightforward process – all you need to do is let your insurer know. You can generally do this either online or by phone.
It’s quick and easy to transfer your Saga car insurance policy using MySaga. Or give us a call on 0800 302 9735 if you’d prefer to speak to one of our team.
You’ll need to provide the following:
You’ll also be able to check the level of cover needed and that the annual mileage is appropriate for your everyday needs.
Whatever happens, make sure you change your car insurance before you start driving your new car. Otherwise you risk driving it home without having proper insurance in place.
Some providers will charge you an admin fee to change your car insurance, but at Saga we’ll do it for free. Your premium, however, may change.
If your new car is worth more than your previous car and has a more powerful engine, your premium is likely to go up. But if you’re downsizing to a smaller car with a smaller engine, your premium might go down.
Yes, you can. To do so, you’ll have to cancel your existing policy and take out a new one, and you may have to pay a cancellation fee.
If you want to cancel your Saga car insurance, a £50 cancellation fee may be applied if you cancel midway through your 12-month term, but you’ll receive a pro-rata refund for your policy if you haven’t made any claims. A cancellation fee is not applicable on our Saga Plus cover level.
Please note that you'll probably lose your No Claim Discount for the current year if you cancel before the end of your 12-month policy.
As well as getting a new car, there are other circumstances that would warrant you updating your car insurance. These include:
