Buying a second-hand car is often a practical and cost-effective way to stay mobile. Whether you’re replacing your current vehicle, downsizing, or returning to driving after a break, a used car can offer flexibility, reliability, and value for money. Many drivers find that choosing a second-hand vehicle allows them to access features or models that might otherwise be out of budget.
Before you drive away, it’s important to arrange car insurance. Having the right car insurance in place from the moment you take ownership means you can focus on enjoying your vehicle with confidence and reassurance.
Used car insurance is simply a standard car insurance policy that covers a previously owned vehicle. The cover you choose works in the same way as insurance for a new car, helping protect you financially if something unexpected happens.
Insurance premiums depend on several factors, including the vehicle’s value, repair costs, insurance group, where the car is kept overnight, and your driving history. While second-hand cars can sometimes cost less to insure, this isn’t always the case. Choosing cover that suits your circumstances is usually more important than focusing only on price.
For many drivers, arranging car insurance is one of the final steps before collecting a vehicle. Knowing your policy is active before driving away helps ensure you stay protected from the very beginning.
A second-hand car doesn’t require a different type of car insurance policy. The same levels of cover are available whether the vehicle is new or used, allowing you to choose protection that matches your needs and driving habits.
You must be insured before driving any vehicle, including when test driving a second-hand car. Dealerships often arrange insurance for test drives, but private sellers usually cannot provide this cover.
Some existing policies include Driving Other Cars cover, although this is not guaranteed and may only provide third-party protection. Temporary insurance can sometimes be arranged for short-term cover when needed.
Arranging second-hand car insurance is usually straightforward. You’ll typically need the vehicle registration number, your personal details, driving history, and information about where the car will be parked overnight.
You can get a car insurance quote before collecting the vehicle, so your cover is ready from the moment you take ownership. Having your car insurance arranged in advance can make the process of buying a used car feel simpler and more organised.
Once your policy is active, you’ll be ready to drive away knowing your cover is in place and you’re protected on the road.
Whether you’re buying from a dealer or a private seller, here are some tips to help you in the process of buying a used car:
Check the bodywork for dents, scratches, rust, or signs of previous repairs. Look at the windscreen for chips or cracks, as even small damage may need repair. Make sure the lights and indicators are working, the wipers clear the windscreen properly, and the tyres have good tread depth and even wear.
Check that seat belts pull out smoothly and click securely into place, and that doors, windows, and mirrors operate as expected.
If you’re unsure what to look for, it can help to bring someone with you who has experience with cars, or consider arranging a professional inspection.
Always test drive the car to make sure everything is in good working order. A test drive helps you understand how the vehicle performs. Listen for unusual noises and check how the brakes, steering, clutch, and suspension feel.
And remember, you need to make sure you’re insured to drive the car before you take it for a test drive.
Make sure the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), number plate, make and model of the car you’re buying matches what’s on the V5C (also known as the log book).
If you’re buying privately, check that the name of the registered owner is the same as the person you’re in contact with.
Use the Government’s MOT checker to check the car’s MOT history, and ask to see the car’s service history to see how well it’s been looked after.
